Simplifies management for continuous operations with seamless setup and maintenance
The platform is easy to set up, maintain, and update. It is easier to manage compared to other solutions and allows for running in a stable environment. The web-scale platform enables easy scalability, providing value for both enterprise-level and medium-sized companies. It helps businesses solve management and stability challenges in Kubernetes environments.

Efficient deployment with resource optimization and multi-region stability
There are several areas where OpenShift could improve. The interface has numerous UI bugs that need addressing. Furthermore, the latest version has deprecated the deployment config, which has its own advantages compared to the deployment container. Lastly, there is no built-in auto-scaling plugin at the OpenShift level; this needs to be addressed as it's available at the cloud provider level, like IBM Cloud.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The platform is easy to set up, maintain, and update."
"The platform is stable."
"The most valuable features of OpenShift include its advanced security, integrated DNS system, built-in pipeline management with Tekton, enhanced networking routes, and dedicated platforms for DataOps and MLOps."
"Red Hat's security throughout the stack and software supply chain is good. It is a lightweight operating system. You don't have to worry about the security patches on the system. You can update the entire environment with security patches, which is a nice feature."
"The most valuable feature is that the solution can be deployed in the cloud which removes the expense of a server."
"I think it's a pretty scalable tool...The solution's technical support has been pretty good."
"The most valuable feature for me in the OpenShift Container Platform is the option to manage different containers and environments and also being able to switch among them."
"I like the Flexibility of the solution."
"Autoscaling is an excellent feature that makes it very simple to scale our applications as required."
"The most valuable are security features, particularly when operating in the cloud."

Cons

"There are some limitations with the non-air gap version as it requires complete internet access, which poses restrictions due to government regulations."
"My impression is that this solution is pretty expensive so I think the pricing plan could improve."
"Things are there and the documentation is there, however, there still needs to be quick guides available."
"One area for product improvement is the support limitations within the subscription models, particularly the restricted support hours for lower-tier subscriptions."
"OpenShift Container Platform is an expensive solution, and its pricing could be improved."
"OpenShift has certain restrictions in terms of managing the cluster when it's running on a public cloud. For example, identity and access management integration with the IM of AWS is quite difficult. It requires some open-source tools to integrate. This is one area where I always see room for improvement."
"From a networking perspective, the routing capability can be matured further. OpenShift doesn't handle restrictions on what kind of IPs are allowed, who can access them, and who cannot access them. So it is a simple matter of just using it with adequate network access, at the network level."
"OpenShift Container Platform could improve by having better integration."
"I believe that the documentation part is an area with certain shortcomings where improvements are required."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"I'm an architect, so I have no involvement in the pricing and licensing of the platform."
"It depends on who you're talking to. For a large corporation, it is acceptable, other than the significant infrastructure requirements. For a small organization, it is in no way suitable, and we'd go for Amazon's container solution."
"Its price is a bit high because it's a premium product, but as long as the business is ready to pay for that, it's okay."
"The pricing is expensive for licensing."
"OpenShift pricing varies by region. For example, a simple cluster with three nodes in DAL-10 might cost around $560 to $580 per month, subject to specific configurations like memory and CPU cores."
"Its licensing is completely incomprehensible. We have special people within our company. They discuss with Red Hat subscription managers. It is too complex, and I do not understand it. We are from the government, and we are trying to be as cheap as possible. Sometimes, I am just amazed at the amount of money that we have to pay. It is crazy."
"We currently have an annual license renewal."
"The pricing and licensing are handled on an upper management level, and I'm not involved in that, but I understand the solution to be somewhat pricey."
